manage your cords

It’s true that our lives revolve more and more around electronics and it’s peculiar that cord management of all our electronics has really become an issue for us! I love travel accessories and MI-O cell phone cradle via YankoDesign helps manage all those cords when charging your cell phone, so they aren’t dangling all over the place.

There’s also this BuiltNY cord cargo case that’s such a clever idea. The stretchable neoprene material really accommodates the accessories you need and makes it the perfect addition to BuiltNY’s product line.

现代的生活有真么多线缆真麻烦!但是最近也有很多有用也不同的产品能帮你组织线缆。

yellow diaper stripes

Jan Chipchase writes a short entry about the failure and successes of color-changing diapers that alert parents of a wet diaper (or nappy):

Yellow nappy stripes – a familiar, comforting sight for parents indicating that the contents of the container/nappy are dry – with a few drops of liquid the stripes turn blue. Whilst it would be disputed by the marketing departments of FMCGs its rare to see (what most people consider to be) genuine leap-forward innovation in mass-market consumer goods such as nappies and razors – but genuine innovation this is. This nappy design is an absolute time saver – parents/carers no longer need check inside the nappy/feel the groin area for moisture/hold-baby-up-to-nose before heading to the changing table. The yellow/blue stripes provide parental confidence; reduce the risk of baby miscomfort; save time; and reduce the risk of erroneously changing a nappy.

But the feature is far from perfect: there appear to be false positives (where the blue stripes appears with no apparent dampness) – it will be interesting to see how motivated manufacturers are to ‘fix’ this issue given the (if 1 in 20, then ~5%?) bump it provides to the bottom line.

Design helps people in big and little ways, but design is also about business; it’s very insightful knowing that as much as Mr. Chipchase does research and design, he also reminds us that we have to consider the bottom line of the new innovative products we develop.

i want a scratch map!

What’s a scratch map you ask?

My Scratch Map is like scratching a lottery ticket after you’ve traveled somewhere (perhaps you’ll want to win some lottery tickets to fund your exotic trip…haha) A subtle way to showcase (or show off) the many places in the world you’ve visited. Reveal the colors under the gold foil by scratching with a coin.

stampy digi-cam

A new look at the Polaroid and instant-photo? In stamp form! Stampy is a camera concept that allows users to ‘stamp’ photos instead of print them (or in addition to printing photos). The pixelation of the stamp is a visual detail that references the original digital photo…? I’m curious what the thought process was behind the product concept, beyond fun and beauty. Its a thoughtful juxtaposition against the Polaroid, that’s for sure…

towelbeachbag

HANS IM GLÜCK (“Hans in Luck”) is a towel and bag in one. Perfect for the current beach, picnic, summer season!
Designed by Jan Dobmaier and available here.

Oddly it’s also perfect for those street vendors in Beijing who have to run from the cops when they come to stop any illegal sales of merchandise. Haha!

夏天用这条毛巾真完美, 是条毛巾也是包包。看起来,有警察的时候这件产品也能给北京街上卖东西的人很好用。哈哈。

DWR: lighting

There’s something very interesting and modern about these partially handblown lights. I can’t pinpoint what it is that I like about them, perhaps it’s the organic shape or the interesting contrast of lamp flowing into itself…regardless, I want! Though the phallic-ness could get a bit disturbing after a while..

mittens

I know it’s the middle of summer and the last thing on our mind is cold hands, but these “ordinary mittens” are adorable and thoughtful! I’m not sure who makes them, but I love them! No worries about loosing your kids’ mittens and encourage them to hold your hand while crossing the street… simple and lovely.

Swiss Army BBQ utensil

Summer is BBQ season! This 3 in 1 fork, knife, spatula is a swiss-army knife for barbeques:

It looks a bit clunky if you ask me with what looks like simply stamped Stainless Steel parts. I wonder how good it really works or if gunk will get stuck in the hinge from all the sauce and bbq juices…Another gimmick? Nonetheless you can give it a try for $24.95 at Solutions.com :P

melting LED lightbulbs

A subtle and poetic reminder of energy waste… (looks a bit like melting ice-cream too!.. maybe I’m just always thinking about food.)

Each time you’d switch these melting LED bulb lamps on, you’d be reminded of the unnecessary energy being wasted, killing our fine world. Keita Ogawa’s concept isn’t available to buy yet, but is a real product.

Sushi Popper reinvents “sushi”

Sushi Popper, a mix between the Flinstone’s Push Up ice-cream and traditional Japanese rice snack, Onigiri. Onigiri, rice balls wrapped in seaweed with various (non-sushi) stuffings, are often sold in convenience stores for Japanese fast food eating. Looks like Sushi Popper has re-invented Japanese food for a mass market at $29.95 for a 6 pack. I wonder what it tastes like..
